Could we reduce costs by having all teachers, administrators, classified that are retirement eligible take a salary reduction to step one, column one if they want to continue to work past retirement time?
Currently, when a retired classified employee works after retirement they are placed on step 1, column 1. For existing staff members, there is no way to categorically move them to step 1 column 1 as it would be an unequal application on the salary scale, and it would not necessarily work as a retirement incentive. Since STRS members with 5 years of service are actually eligible to retire at age 50 (with a major penalty) this suggestion is not likely to get much support. It could also result in concerns over age discrimination.
