Suggestion:
We need to let go of Vandenberg Middle School; just return the facility to the VAFB. Cabrillo HS would no longer need portables and neither the replacement feeder middle school. As for Lompoc High School, place available teachers where needed and begin planning for a replacement modular-constructions HS and feeder middle school.
Response:
LUSD currently leases the property from VAFB for $1/year but owns the buildings. If LUSD were to end the lease, LUSD would have to return the land back to hits natural state. Having all middle school students attend LVMS would require almost as much busing as we currently provide.
An estimate for demolishing the old Maple campus and returning the land to its natural state was $250,000 because of the required asbestos abatement.
Modular constructed classrooms only have a limited lifespan and require major repair/modernization every 20 years. Modular classrooms would only provide an interim solution.
