As a long time local and a graduate of Lompoc High School , Mrs. Mason realized her passion and interest in the field of marine biology through attending Catalina Island Marine Institute in the 5th and 6th grade as well as through her high school marine science teacher Rich Zellers. After high school, she attended UC Santa Barbara where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Aquatic Biology.

During college, she gained her experience and knowledge in animal husbandry as a volunteer coordinator and teacher at Stearn’s Wharf Sea Center in Santa Barbara , CA . Her experience there led her to become a full-time aquarist and diver at Six Flags Marine World in Vallejo , CA . There she maintained exhibits upwards of 10,000 gallons and maintained the health of various species of animals from warm water and cold water sharks, fish and invertebrates. Her areas of strength at Marine World became hard coral propagation, algal mariculture and animal disease recognition and treatment.

Wanting to share her passion and experience in the area of marine science and animal husbandry, Mrs. Mason decided to earn a credential in biological sciences through Chapman University . Mrs. Mason then began teaching at Cabrillo in 2005. Currently she serves as an advisor to the aquarium and Aquarium Club and teaches Advanced Integrated Physical Science, Chemistry, Biology. She has previously taught Earth Science and Tourism: School to
Career as well. As an advisor to the aquarium Mrs. Mason uses her experience to help with several senior projects including coral and jellyfish propagation and algal mariculture.
