Sarah A. M. Barthel holds Bachelor's degrees (1999) in Mathematics and Theatre from Bethany College, West Virginia, where she graduated summa cum laude, passing written and oral comprehensive exams with distinction in both majors. She completed her Master's Degree in Education at Chapman University, California, in 2002.
Barthel has been teaching at Lompoc High since summer school 2000. Though she began as a full time math teacher, Barthel took over the drama program in August of 2002 and has had a split teaching assignment ever since. Over the last decade, Barthel has spent several years as a part-time teacher due to the births of each of her three sons. During the 2017-2018 school year, Barthel returned to LHS full time. Barthel is currently serving as the Department Chairperson for the Visual & Performing Arts Department.
In October 2015, Barthel was named the Santa Barbara County Performing Arts Teacher of the Year. Barthel was the inaugural recipient of this award which is sponsored by the Santa Barbara Bowl. Select choir and drama students traveled with her to Santa Barbara to perform at the Lobero Theatre as part of the third annual "A Salute to Teachers" event, sponsored by the Santa Barbara County Education Office and Cox. To see the main performance piece for the event, go to http://www.cox8tv.com/2015_1.html and move forward to 55:25.
In addition to her responsibilities at Lompoc High School, Barthel serves as the pianist for Peace Lutheran Church (since Fall 2005), and is a member of Lompoc Civic Theatre, among other hobbies. She has enjoyed working for PCPA Theaterfest as the Lead Instructor for the Young People's Project (YPP) and/or YPP Jr. during the summers of 2011 through 2017. In August of 2012, Barthel performed as "Susan" in the Lompoc Civic Theatre production of Jonathan Larson's tick, tick... BOOM! In December 2013, she directed a joint production of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever! between Lompoc High Drama and Lompoc Civic Theatre.
