  • Four LUSD schools will be participating in a federal provision that allows eligible schools to offer free meals to all students regardless of individual income.

Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) eliminates the need for collecting household meal applications to determine eligibility for school meals, relying instead on information from other benefits that families qualify for.

Schools with 62.5 percent or more students identified through their participation in other programs such as CalFresh and CalWORKS can offer breakfast and lunch daily to all students at no charge under CEP.

We are pleased to announce that Clarence Ruth Elementary School, La Honda Elementary School, Maple High School and Bob Forinash Community School will participate in CEP this next school year beginning August 15, 2018.

Meal applications will be replaced with a new form for parents/guardians to fill out at CEP schools. A confidential income form for the purpose of collecting the information needed to secure funding for the schools will be available on line and in the First Day Packets.

This is good news for students and their families. Students can count on two nutritious meals every school day, meal lines will move faster and allow students more time to enjoy their meal and social time; and concerns about “lunch shaming” and collection of meal debts are eliminated at CEP schools.

  • Dear Parents/Guardians of middle and high school students,

The decision to close LUSD schools for the remainder of this week is particularly impactful to secondary schools. After consideration of multiple factors, the district has decided that secondary students will not be required to take final exams for any class for this Fall Semester. This will relieve the stress and anxiety associated with an extended final period and allow our Spring Semester to commence as planned. Resultantly, the following decisions have been made:

    • any plans for administration of Fall Semester finals are cancelled,
    • the Fall Semester grading window will remain open through January 10th,
    • any assignments/projects that were due this week will be accepted until January 10th,
    • official sports and extracurricular eligibility lists will be posted on January 15th,
    • students who are currently ineligible for sports or extracurricular activities due to academics will remain ineligible until January 15th.

This solution, although far from perfect, will result in no student being penalized because of the current situation that is beyond their control. Best wishes to all students and families for a safe Winter Break and we look forward to resuming school on January 8th.
