This is an option that is being considered and will be discussed with employee associations in the coming weeks. In the 2011 - 2012 school year, it is an option for districts (after sign-off from employee associations) to provide up to 10 fewer student days. In the 2012-2013 through the 2014-2015 school year, the student calendar can have 5 fewer days. Employees could "give back" some work days beyond 175 days (e.g. staff development days). Consecutive years with furloughs taken by all employees would be a significant expenditure savings, but they will not address the entire revenue shortfall as of February 2012.
