School Safety Commitment

Lompoc Unified School District is committed to providing a safe school environment for every student, staff member, and community partner. School safety is a long-standing priority for LUSD, supported by training, regular drills, and a strong capacity to respond quickly and effectively. The District follows the Standard Response Protocol (SRP), which provides clear, consistent actions for schools to take during any emergency situation.

Our comprehensive approach to safety includes emergency drills and practice, staff training, campus security, technology, mental health and wellness supports, cybersafety, and an annual cycle of school safety plan reviews and updates. LUSD also works closely with local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency agencies to ensure coordination and alignment in response to potential incidents.

Providing safe learning environments is a core part of LUSD’s mission, and our safety practices are continuously assessed and strengthened.

Standard Response Protocol (SRP)

Lompoc Unified School District follows the Standard Response Protocol (SRP) for emergency situations. The SRP is used by schools and institutions across the nation, giving students, staff, parents, communities, and first responders a common language and course of action.

Unlike plans that address one specific type of emergency, the SRP is based on an “all-hazards” approach and uses clear, simple terms that can be applied to a variety of situations. The SRP identifies five specific actions that may be performed during an incident:

  • Hold – Stay in place, clear the hallways

  • Secure – Get inside, lock outside doors

  • Lockdown – Locks, lights, out of sight

  • Evacuate – Move to a safe location

  • Shelter – Follow hazard- and safety-specific instructions

By practicing these actions regularly, students and staff are better prepared to respond quickly and calmly in the event of a real emergency.

District and Campus Safety Initiatives

  • All LUSD schools and district facilities maintain safety plans that are updated annually. Planning and coordination involves site administrators, Child Welfare and Attendance, Technology Services, Mental Health Services, School Resource Officers, and local emergency responders.
  • Schools conduct monthly drills to practice the five SRP actions: Hold, Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, and Shelter. Drills also include earthquake and fire scenarios.
  • IP camera systems are in place to monitor activity in public spaces.
  • Schools implement programs that build positive relationships with students and foster a culture of safe reporting when concerns arise.
  • LUSD has an anonymous reporting form available for students, families, and community members to share concerns: Anonymous Reporting Form
  • The District also monitors student technology activity for potential safety concerns, including self-harm or threats.
