Dual Immersion

Dual Immersion Options

Recognizing the many benefits of learning more than one language, LUSD promotes dual language options to TK-12 students.

Dual Immersion Program

Hapgood Elementary School offers a dual immersion program in English and Spanish to TK-6 students. In this program, 90% of instruction is taught in Spanish and 10% in English in kindergarten and first grade. Instruction in English increases each year until 50% of instruction is in English and Spanish in fifth and sixth grade. Classes consist of one-third native Spanish speakers, one-third native English speakers, and one-third bilingual students. Parents interested in attending Hapgood need to first register at the school in their attendance area. Enrollment for students living outside of the Hapgood attendance area is contingent upon approval of an intra-district transfer.

State Seal of Biliteracy

LUSD promotes the State Seal of Biliteracy, a recognition by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction for graduating high school students who have attained a high level of proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing in one or more languages in addition to English. The State Seal of Biliteracy is marked by a gold seal affixed to the diploma or transcript. High school and middle school counselors provide support to students interested in earning the State Seal of Biliteracy.
